Hand Claude Your Busywork: A Beginner’s Guide to Letting AI Work on Your Desktop

Six folders appear in Downloads, and a one-page list of the files Claude could not place sits beside them. The sort run took four minutes. That is what the demo videos show, and it is real.

What they leave out is smaller and duller. Cowork stopped being a separate thing on 16 September 2026, when Anthropic folded it into ordinary Claude.

The free plan does not include it. Anything touching your own files needs the Claude Desktop app open on your machine.

The four-minute run also arrives with about six minutes of checking behind it. So the real question is not whether the demo is real.

It is whether $20 a month is worth it for one chore you can name, and what exactly you hand over when you point Claude at your files.

One chore, on one copied folder, will answer both questions tonight.

Cowork is now just Claude, on paid plans

Cowork is now just Claude, on paid plans

There is nothing called Cowork to hunt for in a menu. On 16 September 2026 Anthropic folded it into ordinary Claude, so one subscription now covers both the chat and the part that moves files around.

You never choose a mode. Claude reads the request and switches itself.

That switch costs money. Pro runs $20 a month, Max $100, Ultra $200, Team $25 a seat monthly, then Enterprise on a quote.

The $0 free plan leaves it out entirely, along with the Chrome and Microsoft 365 connections, so a free account cannot start the Downloads sort at all.

The other half of the setup is a small program, not a website. Claude Desktop installs on macOS or Windows and has to be open and connected while a job runs.

A browser tab on its own sees none of your folders, so the sort would have nothing to work on.

Paid plan, desktop app, sign in. That is the whole shopping list for tonight's job, with no add-on, plugin or second subscription to chase down first.

Files, browser and screen: what it can reach

Files, browser and screen: what it can reach

Everything Claude touches on your machine, it touches through that open desktop app. The thinking happens on Anthropic's servers, but the door into your folders, your browser and your screen is the program sitting on your computer. Close it and the door shuts.

The app also adds a small floating window called quick entry, which sits on top of whatever you have open so you can type a request without switching apps.

One catch: the screenshot feature inside that little window works on Mac only. Windows readers get the window, minus the screenshots.

Linux is narrower still. The desktop app there is in beta and has no Computer Use, which is the part that clicks and types on screen.

A Linux reader can still run cloud-side work, but cannot aim Claude at local folders the way the Windows and macOS steps assume.

Reach is handed over one folder at a time, which is the good news. Nominate Downloads alone and the rest of the drive stays out of scope, so the 240-file sort never needs sight of anything else.

What it costs, and why agent tasks burn more

What it costs, and why agent tasks burn more

Your $20 Pro plan buys access, but not a fixed amount of work. A Cowork task can burn 50 to 100 times the tokens of a chat message. A token is the unit Claude bills in, roughly three-quarters of a word.

Anthropic's pricing page says usage cost scales with model and task, so a big file job can run up a bill in a way a chat question never does. Current limits are read on that page, not quoted from an article that goes stale.

The ladder: Pro is $20 monthly or $17 a month billed annually at $200 up front. Max is $100 a month, Ultra $200 a month, Team $25 a seat monthly or $20 a seat billed annually.

The split that keeps the bill down: routine drafting and email go in plain chat, which is cheap. Reserve Cowork for chores that need the files on disk, like the Downloads sort, and keep those to one or two a week.

At $20 a month, one 35-minute chore done weekly covers Pro. You do not need Max or Ultra for this. Sort one folder a week, review it, and the plan has paid for itself in saved time before the month is out.

โš ๏ธ COMMON MISTAKE

Do not quote the limit from this page

Free tiers, plan limits and per-task costs change without notice. Check the tool's own pricing page the week you decide, and set a spending limit before any paid service is connected.

Install, connect, and give it one job

Install, connect, and give it one job

Once the plan is settled, the first session is four moves and one paragraph of text.

Get the Claude Desktop app for macOS or Windows onto the machine, sign in with the paid account, and click through the local-access request when it appears.

A browser tab alone will not reach your disk.

Point it at Downloads and nothing else. Set the permission mode to Manual before the first run, so the job pauses on each step and waits for your yes. Then paste this, in full, into the box:

Prompt to copy

In my Downloads folder, sort the 240 files into six folders by type: Documents, Images, Spreadsheets, PDFs, Installers, Other. Don't delete anything. Then give me a one-page list of every file you could not place.

The instruction does three things at once. It forbids deletion, it names the six folders, and it asks for a written list of whatever it could not sort. What comes back is a tidy Downloads folder plus that one-page list of stragglers to glance over.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ From install to sorted folder

1

Start with a paid account

Cowork is not on the $0 plan. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually at $200 up front.

2

Keep the app open

A local task stops if the machine sleeps. Scheduled tasks run in the cloud with the app closed, but the sort will not.

3

Loosen Manual only after the first list

Auto lets Claude vet each action and block unsafe ones. Permanent deletion still needs an explicit Allow in every mode.

4

Watch the usage meter

A task like this can burn 50 to 100 times the tokens of a chat message. Read current limits on Anthropic's pricing page.

5

Expect a big review on day one

Checking the six folders and the straggler list runs about 6 minutes for 240 files, against 35 minutes by hand.

The first five chores worth handing over

The first five chores worth handing over

One sorted folder proves the mechanics. The better question is which of your other chores deserve the same treatment, and each one should be judged on three separate times. Minutes by hand, Claude's own run time, and your review.

Sort the 240 files: 35 by hand, 4 to run, 6 to review. Summarize 12 one-page PDF briefs: 40, 5, 8. Five follow-up emails from a transcript: 25, 1, 6.

Rename and tag 60 photos: 20, 2, 4. A weekly expense sheet from downloaded CSVs: 30, 3, 7.

The tool changes with the chore. Claude Cowork handles the folder sort, the PDF briefs and the photo renaming, because those need the files on disk.

Plain Claude chat writes the five emails from a transcript alone. ChatGPT Work in the cloud builds the expense sheet.

The honest total: 150 minutes by hand against 15 minutes of runs plus 31 minutes of review. That is 104 minutes saved, not 135. The run time is the smallest of the three numbers every time.

Start with the folder sort. Its six minutes of review, opening six folders and scanning the unplaced list, are the easiest of the five to check.

Six words the demos assume you know

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ TERM Quick entry The small Claude window that floats over whatever app you have open.
๐Ÿ”ค TERM Token A small chunk of text, often part of a word, that AI services count to measure what you send and what comes back.
๐Ÿ” TERM Permission mode The setting that decides whether Claude asks before each action, checks its own actions, or runs without stopping.

Start in Manual; a sleeping laptop kills the job

Start in Manual; a sleeping laptop kills the job

The review minutes only protect you if the run touched nothing irreplaceable, and that is settled before it starts.

Manual is the mode to pick: Claude stops and asks before each action. Auto lets Claude judge its own steps and skip the unsafe ones. Skip runs straight through without pausing.

Manual is also what Enterprise sets as its default, which tells you how the cautious setup looks. Spend the first week there. Expect a yes prompt on nearly every file move, and expect it to feel slow.

Two things end a run. A permanent delete always stops for an explicit Allow, and that request is your final chance to say no.

A local task also dies if the laptop sleeps mid-run, and a running task belongs to you alone and cannot be shared.

Watch the default: in a ZDNET test, ChatGPT Work deleted duplicate PDFs with no permission prompt at all. Do not copy that as your safe setup.

Scheduled tasks are the workaround for sleep. They run in the cloud with the desktop app closed, so an overnight job finishes while the machine is off.

Two permission habits, one folder

โœ…

First week

  • Manual mode on every run
  • One folder granted, nothing else
  • Delete nothing in the first instruction
  • Read the unplaced list before moving files
โš ๏ธ

What the demos skip

  • Skip mode on the first attempt
  • Whole drive access
  • Cleanup scripts that delete duplicates
  • Trusting a finished-looking folder without checking

What never goes into the folder

What never goes into the folder

Permission modes govern what the task does. Nothing yet governs what it can see. Passwords, client files, and medical or financial records stay out, both from the folder and from the chat box.

Paying for Pro does not put them back in, because every chat can still be read and kept.

On free and personal plans, chats may be used to improve the company's models unless the switch is turned off in settings.

That applies to the chat around the task as much as to the task itself, so a diagnosis typed into a help message carries the same risk as a file.

The unplaced list is not exempt. File names on it, and every fact, figure, quote and link Claude returns, can be invented with total confidence.

Check each line against the folder before acting on it, because a file it says it could not place may simply not exist.

So build the run on a copy: a folder holding only what the chore needs, sorted first, reviewed before anything in it is sent or filed. The original Downloads folder stays untouched, and a wrong call costs nothing but a re-run.

Point it at this, not that

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to code to use Claude on my desktop?

No. You install the desktop app, sign in on a paid plan, allow one folder, and type a plain-English instruction. The sort job in this article is one paragraph of ordinary words, with no script and no settings file.

Can I use the free Claude plan for this?

Not for desktop work. The $0 plan does not include Cowork, and it also lacks the Chrome and Microsoft 365 integrations. You need a paid plan plus the Desktop app for macOS or Windows open and connected.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep mid-task?

A local task stops. If you need a job to survive a closed lid, use a scheduled task instead, because those run in the cloud with the desktop app shut.

Will Claude delete files without asking?

Permanent deletion always stops for an explicit Allow, whatever permission mode you set. Keep the first job's instruction to delete nothing anyway, so the only thing to review is where files landed.

Is ChatGPT Work a better choice?

For some chores. The weekly expense sheet built from downloaded spreadsheets belongs in ChatGPT Work in the cloud. For folder sorting, PDF briefs and photo renaming, Claude Cowork reaches local files with fewer steps.

How long until I know whether the $20 is worth it?

One evening. Copy the Downloads folder, run the sort in Manual mode, and time your review. If those minutes plus the run beat the 35 minutes by hand, pay for Pro. If not, wait.

Copy the folder tonight, buy Pro tomorrow

Copy the Downloads folder to a second folder, install the Claude Desktop app, and run the sort instruction in Manual mode on the copy tonight. Time your review honestly, including the unplaced list.

If those minutes plus the four-minute run beat the 35 minutes the job takes by hand, pay the $20 for Pro. If they do not, stay on the free plan and skip the desktop work entirely.

One more reader should wait: anyone on Linux, or anyone whose chore cannot be done on a copy folder. Neither has a clean first job yet.
